We find that one person who handles each
project from beginning to end is more efficient, provides better service to the
customers (faculty, staff and sponsors) and results in better internal accountability
than several people working together who must hand things off from time-to-time.
With the exception of invoicing and cash management, we truly have integrated
pre and post award in our organizational model.

organizational models for sponsored research offices
I am referring to several people (pre and
post award) working together to manage a particular award rather than one
person handling a given award from beginning to end. Thanks.

Do you mean an administrator handling
everything, or administrators and financial analysts on the same team reporting
to the same director?

We are exploring the concept of “life-cycle
teams” as a means of further integrating our pre- and post-award
activities and personnel. We would really appreciate if others who either
currently use or formerly used this model would share their views on the pros
and cons. Please feel free to email me directly (xxxxxx@pobox.upenn.edu) if you
prefer. Thanks very much.
