In January, Apple announced its new line of computers with Intel processors, computer chips that will make Macs run faster than previous versions. Previously all Macs operated with a different type of processor called "PowerPC."  This new chip means that Apple needs to upgrade its operating system and software to run on this new processor.

Apple is transitioning all of its computers to these new Intel processors.  If you go an buy a Mac today, you might buy a computer with the old processor or you might buy one with the new processor.  I believe the iMacs have transitioned to the new chip; Apple also released a new line of notebook computers with these new chips.  I believe that by the Fall that all Macs sold will have the new Intel chip.

So, if you someone on your campus purchased a Mac after January 10 (when the new Intel-based Mac was introduced), there is a chance that it had an Intel chip inside.  If you have an older Mac (in use before January 10), you likely do not have a Mac with the correct processor to take advantage of the Windows XP dual-boot option.

Charlie,
I'm a non-techie PC user trying to assist our Mac users...
is the Intel-based Mac the latest version? Or how does
it differ from other Macs? Does it go by any other name?

Just received word that Apple will include technology in the next major release of Mac OS X, Leopard, that lets you install and run the Windows XP operating system on your Mac. Called Boot Camp (for now), you can download a public beta today.

Boot Camp lets you install Windows XP without moving your Mac data.

For more, see http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

Is this the answer we've been seeking for Mac users???????
