Maria, at University of
Wisconsin-River Falls, we follow the same practice that you do--salary
savings resulting from the difference between grant-funded salaries and
replacement costs stay in the college that originated the proposal.
That's our practice with all salary-savings, in fact. If a dept
doesn't fill a tenure track position for a year, the dean holds onto the
difference between the allocated salary and the cost of an adjunct
faculty. Most deans pass those savings down to the department, but
it's not required.

Looking
for some advice
If a grant recovers faculty replacement salary and there are any monies
remaining after you hire an adjunct, who has control over the balance and
designates how it is to be allocated? We have a new Provost who is
reviewing our past practice of sending all the replacement funds to the
Dean and would like to know how other institutions handle this
situation. Thanks.
