Is it not a fairly common practice, for example, for a doctoral level graduate student to be working in a lab setting as a paid graduate research assistant and essentially be earning academic credit in some way for her work tied in to the sponsored project work being done in the lab? There are also funding opportunities for this specific purpose.

Subject: [RESADM-L] Can a grad student receive wages while working on thesis?
We have a PI that would like to hire a grad student to assist him with a project. The student will be using this work to finish his thesis. Can the student be paid for work that will benefit him for his thesis?
Thank you,
Michelle
