William, that was certainly the situation when I was a grad student. I was working under the PIs research program, paid as a research assistant, and completing my thesis and dissertation studies (under the grant-funded research program).

Is it not a fairly common practice, for example, for a doctoral level graduate student to be working in a lab setting as a paid graduate research assistant and essentially be earning academic credit in some way for her work tied in to the sponsored project work being done in the lab?  (So long as the two do not conflict?)

As long as the student’s research work is related to, and benefits, the faculty member’s project, yes. There are also funding opportunities for this specific purpose.

We have a PI that would like to hire a grad student to assist him with a project.  The student will be using this work to finish his thesis.  Can the student be paid for work that will benefit him for his thesis?

Thank you,

Michelle
