The EU community is very sensitive (some might say irrational) about genetically modified foods ( eg. roundup ready soy beans, corn carrying the BT gene for control of earworm, etc).  A bunch of kooks in the UK even attacked a research facility (in the UK) and destroyed a stand of genetically modified poplars (who, I might add, are the most inoffensive of trees).  In any event, many if not all genetically modified (GM) foods are banned for import.  Hence the joke.
