Director Research and Sponsored Programs

Applications and nominations are solicited for the position of Director of
Research and Sponsored Programs at The University of Southern Mississippi
(USM), located in Hattiesburg, Miss.  The Director reports to the Vice
President for Research and is responsible for providing support services
for research administration and for promoting research activities within
the University.  The scope and nature of research administration and
sponsored program activities are evolving rapidly at USM.  Externally
supported research and sponsored programs have increased from $12.3 million
in 1989 to more than $21 million in 1998.  The expansion in volume of
sponsored program activities has seen the concurrent growth of
multidisciplinary, multi-institutional projects.  The Director will promote
USM initiatives to both federal and state funding agencies and to other
funding sources, including private foundations.  The job will require
considerable travel and networking activities, both within and outside the
University.

Responsibilities of the position include management of the Office of
Research and Sponsored Programs, identification and development of funding
sources, oversight of pre-award processing and pre-award services including
budgeting, reporting and disseminating information, management of research
award compliance services, facilitation of faculty development in research,
and coordination of collaborative projects between units of the University
and between USM and other institutions.  The Director will represent the
University in statewide projects and will coordinate and oversee University
research-related committees.  He/she will be responsible for oversight of
the review, preparation and negotiation of federal, state, and industrial
contracts  and implementation and coordination of Electronic Research
Administration within the University.

The successful candidate  must have an earned doctorate, a minimum of five
(5) years of experience in research administration and grant/contract
negotiation, and a record of scholarly research activity.  The candidate
should have excellent interpersonal, technical writing, and oral
communication skills.  He/she must have a working knowledge of research
compliance issues, federal regulations, and public as well as private
funding sources.
