Exempt Employees Deanne L. Hoenscheid 22 Apr 1999 13:49 EST

This is not really a "research" question but rather a question about
university policy on exempt employees. I would appreciate any
information you have on how your university handles exempt staff in
terms of "additional compensation" (if allowed at all). We have tried
to use our Research Engineers, whom are exempt employees, to assist our
industrial liaison program occasionally when a project comes in. They
are familiar with the equipment and are readily available. However, we
have been told that since they are exempt (under FLSA standards), they
cannot perform this extra work and be compensated for it unless they use
vacation time. As an exempt employee, you are required to work at least
40 hours a week to perform your job. This makes it hard to give our
engineers any incentive to work with the liaison program if they cannot
be given additional compensation for the work provided.

Has anyone else run into a similar situation? If not, could you tell me
what your policy is regarding compensation for exempt employees? I
would greatly appreciate the input.

Thanks for your assistance!
