Re: Sponsored Project? Gollos, Hal 13 Apr 1999 09:17 EST

Angela,

I have a few comments about your question.

First of all if these funds were given to a faculty member with no
provisions
attached (ie: technical or financial reporting) and is for his/her
unrestricted
use then I would agree with John Case that this is a gift. If the funds
were received
as membership fees or some vehicle like that then these funds should be
treated
as income and put into an income account. The department may have some
claim to these funds as well as the faculty member.

I don't know how your institution works but I would imagine your
Controller's Office
would make the determination on the status of these funds.

I don't believe the funds should be treated as a sponsored project and
have indirects
attached to them. In any event there should be documentation as to the
origin of
these funds and to the purpose of their use in case of audit.

Regards,

Hal Gollos
