Re: Definitions Pat Hawk 10 Feb 1999 16:36 EST

Okay, if you're looking at the gift vs. grant question, I can tell you
what the policy was in my days at the University of Virginia.

Let's take the example of an award from the Ford Foundation. If that
award contained any requirements for reporting (other than the "we'd like
to know in broad terms what you did with the money), required the
University to "do something" (e.g., provide data, technical reports) or
required the return of unexpended funds, then it was a grant and not a
 gift.

Dear Resadm-l'ers:

Thanks for the help on definitions. My request for defintions came up b=
ecause
of a request by our University Advancement office -- they wanted to know=
 the
difference between a grant and contract. The federal definitions really=
 aren't
of much use to us in this case since Advancement doesn't count federally=
 funded
awards. So, I thought I'd find out what other offices have used and tak=
e it
from there.

The gift v. grant discussion has been very interesting in light of our
relationship with Advancement. The age old question of whether a fundin=
g is a
gift or a sponsored program continues here at Cal Poly.
