Re: budget preparation to NSF (regular proposals) Pfaff, Joyce M. 27 Oct 1998 09:11 EST

It is our understanding that NSF does not want to fund AY salaries, from any
directorate. Their feeling is that since research is a portion of each
faculty member's responsibility, work done during the academic year should
be covered by the institution. We have, however, ON OCCASSION, requested
approval from the applicabe program manager to request AY salary for a PI.
Usually it is someone who has a nonfundedn faculty position. Advise your
faculty to contact the program manager and see what he/she says. It never
hurts to ask!

Subject: budget preparation to NSF (regular proposals)

In preparing budgets to NSF on regular research proposals, say to the
science and engineering directorates, is it improper to request AY salary
support in addition to the 2 months of summer salary? The faculty member
would not be on sabbatical or any other type of leave status. Have any of
you had requests to prepare budgets so that the departments or colleges get
some salary relief?

In addition, does your sponsored projects office prepare budgets for
faculty?
Or, does your office review the budgets that have been developed in the
the faculty departments?

Thank you,
