Results of Research Office Survey Loreene Broker 14 Feb 1997 03:00 EST

On 13 Feb 1997 Tim Atkinson wrote concerning the data generate from the
survey:

All opinions and interpretations of this data are welcome. I believe
when we correlate a better data set with economic trends of each
corresponding decade, we may be able to draw some interesting
conclusions about our profession.

I think another variable to explore would have to include the federal
regualtions. Within the past 50 years, formality and red tape in the
federal (and some state) governments may have necessitated office
establishment. In the 40's for instance, there may have been no central
research office at many institutions because departmental secretaries could
handle the load. Also, with the introduction of the federal regulations
for protecting human subjects, animal welfare, biohazards, etc. a
centralized office may have been formed.
