The experience we had at UMAB was when the  P.I. who had a terminal illness
died.  After his death we notified NIH and at that time recommended a substitute
p.i.  Is there another faculty member in your department who has the expertise
and experience which would qualify them to be the replacement p.i?  We had the
department chairman and dean provide justification as to why it would be
appropriate for the individual recommended by UMAB to assume the research
project to its termination.  Our recommendation was accepted by NIH. Marjorie
