Here at Cal Poly, faculty may be paid for up to a maximum of 25% additional
effort during the academic year as well as Summer quarter work. The
compensation rate used for added effort (added comp)
is an hourly computation based on their contracted rate.  I am
not sure what you mean by "are payments preapproved".  If you mean do
Deparment Chairs and Deans know of the "added compensation" when
the proposal is routed through campus for approval prior to submission to
the sponsor, the answer is yes.  Our form identifies time involvement as
added comp or release time.
