externally funded research & service activities Tim Sparklin, Grants Management, (410) 455-2737 31 Aug 1995 10:20 EST

Dear list people,

I've been asked by my Dean to review and contemplate the wording of
the following section of our university's "Faculty Roles and
Responsibilites".

The section (Part VI.C.) reads: " Assisgnement of additional time for a
research or service activities can be supported by external funds,
either research or training grants. In these instances, the accompanying
reduction of expectations for service or instruction should mirror
the replacement of departmental salary support by externally-funded
salary support."

Our campus is reviewing its policies on faculty workload and the question
has come up - is this policy clear and to the point on how faculty are
to spend/devote their time? Is this a clear point on other campuses ?
Is there a more adequate or complete way of explaining to faculty their
roles and responsibilities, when it comes to external funding ? Or, do
I have a policy comprehension-deficit?

Comments, suggestions, reviews would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Tim
