ORSP Web Servers Nancy Peterson 26 Jul 1995 09:06 EST

Learning to put things on the WWW can be compared to learning a new word
processing system. At first, you're clumsy and the process is time
consuming because you make mistakes and/or have to keep consulting the
manual. But after a certain amount of time, it gets easier. You know what
codes are needed; you can look at a page of data and quickly see where you
forgot to
put what codes; and you can write something from scratch and put in the
codes without thinking about it.

Almost everything on my web pages (http://www.wiona.msus.edu/grants/home.htm)
existed in written form in a word processing format before I started working
on the web pages. Almost anything I write in the future (my newsletter,
gnews updates, policy revisions, etc.) would have to be produced regardless
of whether or not it was put in html format...so it's no big deal to do so!

I could worry about faculty and staff that don't have www access, but most
do and the ones that use the web the most are probably the ones that are the
more active grant seekers. I also will bow to the needs of the computer-shy
by continuing to send out my monthly Bulletin newsletter in hard copy, but
in general I'm going to lobby for faculty using Netscape. I'm going to
emphsize that the material I have on my pages is actually easier to use
because you can search documents (including my deadlines list) for key words
and phrases much more efficiently if you're using my web pages.

Grantseekers who don't keep up with technological developments are going to
be left behind in the dust...
