Hatch Act Gail Wine 06 Apr 1995 08:37 EST

Our auditors have been citing us for several years for not following
the Hatch Act provisions of getting assurances from our employees
funded by federal grants that they will not engage in bipartisan
politics while being paid with federal funds. Though large
colleges/universities most likely have dealt with this issue, I
haven't talked with anyone from smaller liberal arts colleges about
Bowdoin's size who knows of any such provision made by their
institution. Their auditors don't seem to be interested in that
regulation.

I'd be interested to hear how any other institution deals with this.
Do you have a separate form or is there a statement on the hiring
papers that get signed by the new employee? What about PIs who get
paid summer salaries from their grants for 2 months a year? Do they
have to agree not to be politically active for those 2 months?

Any shared wisdom will be much appreciated!
