In larger institutions, such as Yale, you need to have both the cooperation
and autonomy of the Grant & Contract Office and the Development Office.
Grant & Contract Offices work with the respective Departmental Business
Offices for pre-award administration of grants & contracts. The pre-award
administration of a potential gift or foundation specifically assigned to a
faculty member, needs the same type of coordination. Grant & Contract
Offices have deadline issues, specific agency knowledge, and the shear
volume of pre and post award administration, that makes it a very different
business from Development. Development, on the otherhand, may be working
with several faculty to coordinate a visit to a potential donor. However,
there are other Development activities, such as Capital Campaigns and Alumni
affairs, which are clearly different and unique to themselves.

Greetings,

One thread that I picked up in the conversation about reporting lines for a
grants office is that it is a BAD IDEA to combine the functions of a
grants office and a development office.

I wonder if anybody out there might care to elaborate on this idea.
On the face of it, it would appear to offer some advantages, especially
for smaller institutions.
