-----------------------------------------------------------
As you may be aware, the NIH Grants Policy Office each year sponsors two
regional seminars in program funding and/or grants administration for
the grantee community.

I am trying to plan a regional seminar for the northeast region for next
spring or summer, but have not found a host. The components that make
for a successful host include an institutional commitment (including the
necessary resources) to carry-out the host's responsiblities (see
below); geographic accessibility (e.g., airport hub); good-sized
population of universities/other NIH grantees in the local area; and
good conference facilities (at the host institution if possible or at a
local hotel/conference center).

The host institution deals with all on-site logistics leading up to and
during the seminar, such as advertisement, registration, choosing
facilities, selecting hotels for accommodations, meals, reproduction of
handouts, assembly of packets, nametags, etc. The host collects the
registration fee directly from the participants, usually very reasonable
($100-125), that covers the cost of the things described above. NIH
covers the travel and per diem of the faculty we bring.

If anyone in the northeast is interested and would like more
information, please respond directly to me (rather than the list) or
give me a call on 301/496-5967. Since we held one in Baltimore in 1992,
I would prefer something farther north, but will keep it open for now.

Seminars for beyond the northeast have not been finalied yet, as we have
found it is not beneficial to schedule them too far into the future,
appropriations and FTEs being what they are both for us and you. We
already have multiple offers from institutions in other regions for
future seminars, so I am not soliciting offers for other regions at this
time, although I don't want to discourage them either.

Those interested in attending a seminar should watch the NIH Guide for
information. The southwest regional seminar was mentioned briefly in
the NIH Guide on June 3, 1994 (vol. 23, no. 21) and provided information
on obtaining registration information from the University of New Mexico.
A more detailed announcement will appear in a September issue of the NIH
Guide.

Thank you for your assistance.
