Re: What Are You Called? Janet Murphy 29 Jun 1994 18:29 EST

At QUT in Brisbane Australia we are called the Office of Research
(within the Division of Research and Advancement). There are three
main sections in our Office - Research Grants' Section, Research
Students' Section and Research Information System Section

Under our umbrella comes:
Grant administration (finance is dealt with in detail in the
 University's Finance Department)
 Policy interpretation and development
All liaison/discussions with external granting bodies
Administration of research higher degree studies (in the
Research Students' Section - admission, monitoring of
doctoral program, thesis handling, examination process
Scholarships and Fellowships - internal and external
Development and maintenance of the University's Research
Information System and preparation of associated
statistical and other reports required by Government
 and other granting agencies

Other Offices withion our Division are Office of Commercial Services
(who deal with a contract research and intellectual property,
consultancies and testing services inter alia), Office of Educational
Services (which deals with continuing education, international
marketing etc) and the Development Office which looks after bequests,
prizes, and donations generally to the University and also serves an
alumni function.

There have been talks to change our name for as long as we have
existed. No-one has come up with a better (for better read more
general) descriptor of our function, so Office of Research we remain -
for at least another week or two...

All the best!
