The Associate Director for Research Development will report to the Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s Director of Administration.  This individual will: 1) Lead the Grant Development Program, which includes oversite of a Grant Writer/Medical Editor, creation of new grant development functions, facilitation of large multi-disciplinary grants, and the maintenance of relevant grant submission materials (e.g. facilities and resources, letters of support, biosketches, etc.). 2) Provide grant/proposal and manuscript writing and editing to support individual faculty in developing high-quality competitive grant applications and manuscript publications for research.  3) Develop educational trainings, seminars, and workshops on grant and manuscript preparation.  And 4) Contribute directly to the success of other CTSI Programs (e.g. Team Science, Mentored Career Development, Pilots) as appropriate.

The Associate Director will participate in, and at times lead, the preparation of applications in response to funding opportunities, particularly those that are institutionally cross-cutting in nature, to pursue major multi- and interdisciplinary research aligned with the Medical Center strategic plan. He/she will work closely with the Research Deans, Center Directors, faculty, staff and other stakeholders to (a) increase the number of, and improve the competitiveness of, grant applications, and (b) develop new services and programs to further support faculty in pursuing funding for research.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
•	Minimum Requirements:
o	Bachelor’s Degree
o	8 years of experience writing and/or editing grant proposals
o	5 years of experience writing and/or editing manuscripts
•	Preferences
o	Graduate degree preferred; other degrees considered with appropriate experience
o	Related Professional Certifications (e.g. Board of Editors in the Life Sciences, Medical Writer Certified, Grant Professional Certified)
o	Experience working in a busy academic medical center

REPORTS TO: Director of Administration, Clinical and Translational Science Institute

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: N/A

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  (Please list 10-12 accountabilities with no bullet points)

1.	Grant Editing:  Edit grant proposals; provide guidance and assistance to investigators in the interpretation of the funding agency's requirements;
a.	Provide strategic guidance and/or assists, as appropriate, in writing of specific sections of grant applications at the request of faculty;
b.	Direct preparation of complex research proposals; support grant seekers in preparing resubmissions; work with PIs to write and revise rebuttal letters regarding grant reviews; work with PIs to write and revise requested ancillary information to program officers, to bolster a case for funding

2.	Grant Writing: Acts as the lead writer of infrastructure (e.g., equipment, construction, training) applications to foster improved research resources across the institution;

3.	CTSI-Supported Early-Career Faculty: Work closely with KL2 awardees and Translational Scholar Academy members to facilitate their success in manuscript submissions and grant applications;

4.	CTSI Pilot Grantees: Work collaboratively with CTSI pilot awardees to facilitate manuscript development and preparation of external grant applications;

5.	Research Studios: Participate in CTSI Studio sessions to assist faculty in improving competitiveness of grant applications;

6.	Education and Training:  Lead and/or participate in workshops, seminars, webinars, and other educational activities related to grant and manuscript preparation for the Wake Forest School of Medicine community, and for specific departments/centers on request;

7.	Manuscripts:  Edit drafts of manuscripts for publication in biomedical journals; advise faculty on journal choices; provide guidance in answering reviewers' comments;

8.	CTSI Website: Oversee regular updates of content related to grant and manuscript development for the CTSI website, including but not limited to boilerplate content for grant applications, the K Writers Toolkit, and the T Writers Toolkit (including oversight of a T-Table service);

9.	Other CTSI projects: Work collaboratively with CTSI personnel on ad hoc projects, such as extramural funding opportunities specific to the CTSI, writing and editing for special reports, white papers, or other specialized documents;

10.	Supervise work of editorial staff who will support these functions.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
•	Thorough knowledge of grant application criteria and various funding mechanisms and sources
•	Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) to work effectively with faculty and other research staff
•	Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks with accuracy and attention to detail, while meeting firm deadlines
•	Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
•	Familiarity with Biomedical Sciences grant applications
