The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at California State University Long Beach has an opening for a Research Analyst.  This is a new position.

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs provides the following services: up-to-date information on grant and contract opportunities, professional grant proposal preparation assistance, pre-award clearance for all grant and contract proposals, post-award sponsored programs administration, support for the University Scholarly and Creative Activities Committee, support for the University's research risk committees, management of University research support facilities, and information and support for technology transfer and other intellectual property concerns.

Position Description

The Research Analyst coordinates the daily and long-range operations of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) related to data management, including archiving, retrieval, interpretation, and reporting. Plans and performs data-driven research for informed decision making in the evaluation, alteration, development, and implementation of ORSP policies and procedures to better meet institutional needs and goals in research and external support. Assists in the development and implementation of various data management tools and applications to improve ORSP and institutional research effectiveness. Provides technical assistance and training to faculty, staff, and administrators in the use of fiscal, compliance, data management, search engine, and other research administration management software tools. Interprets data and compiles statistical and analytical reports from a wide variety of databases and platforms related to ORSP functions for presentation. Helps maintain the ORSP website.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge and understanding of current research funding trends in higher education. Knowledge of post-award grant management in varied web-based environments is highly desirable. Strong skills in research methodology, design, and statistics. Ability to develop and use automated systems for collecting and managing data. Ability to interface multiple data platforms to integrate into a single output. Proficient in SQL and relational databases. Proficient in Pivot Tables and form generation using Adobe Acrobat. Proficient in web design and the generation of online forms with associated databases. Ability to collaborate with technical developers to provide and collect needed data for program evaluations and reports for internal and external use. Ability to understand University business processes and to interpret and translate business needs from meetings and work groups in order to guide and specify operational procedures and organize workflow within the ORSP to promote efficiency and service to end users. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to engage in multiple initiatives simultaneously. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a collaborative environment and provide leadership conducive to consensus building and teamwork. Proven ability to work under pressure to meet both internal and external deadlines and respond in a timely manner to requests from University officials and external agencies. Good analytical, quantitative, and computer skills.

Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and three years of full-time business analyst experience in research administration and grants management required. Master's degree preferred. Experience extracting data from PeopleSoft financial database systems and warehouse databases, analyzing and evaluating information, and constructing high level summary information from detailed data.
