Director, Sponsored Programs, Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine

The Director of Sponsored Programs of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) holds primary responsibility for assuring that WFIRM’s complex and varied portfolio of sponsored research arrangements meets all Medical Center, University, state, federal, and sponsor guidelines, rules, policies and laws, and oversees the day-to-day operations of WFIRM Sponsored Programs, which encompasses all pre and post award activities.  The Director provides leadership for initiatives to improve extramural funding success, and encourages and supports WFIRM investigators in their pursuit of support for research and development programs.  The Director cultivates and maintains collaborative partnerships across diverse constituent groups within WFIRM and the Medical Center to promote and enable the WFIRM mission to improve patients’ lives by developing regenerative medicine therapies and support technologies.

Responsibilities:
1. Provides leadership and direction for pre- and post-award services and post-award fiscal administration and reporting for a complex and varied ~$40 million portfolio of sponsored research arrangements, which includes funding from NIH, DoD, NASA, DoE, state agencies and state government, national and international foundations and private philanthropists, and commercial entities, using a broad range of funding instruments including grants, contracts, gifts, cooperative agreements, subcontracts, program projects, directed funding, and intellectual and tangible property agreements. Assures that all pre- and post-award sponsored program functions are conducted in accordance with sponsor guidelines, institutional policies, and applicable laws and regulations.

2. Negotiates and manages complex agreements including Department of Defense and other federal grants and contracts, industry agreements, master agreements and subcontractual agreements. Works closely with WFIRM legal and intellectual property units and Medical Center offices to identify and address issues and to assure appropriate negotiation, execution and management of grants and contracts.

3. Provides overall direction and supervision of WFIRM Sponsored Programs staff to ensure that the mission is being effectively pursued. Provides direction, oversight, and expertise for the management of multi-institutional research programs led by WFIRM. Develops and provides training to faculty and research personnel on various aspects of sponsored research administration.

4. Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders including WFIRM faculty, students, and staff and Medical Center and University administrators to identify ways to continue to add value to the sponsored program process, reduce the administrative burden, and promote and enable the WFIRM mission.

5. Works closely with other units within WFIRM and relevant Medical Center offices including Office of Sponsored Programs, Financial Services Office/Controller's Office, Compliance Office, Institutional Review Board, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Conflict of Interest, Translational Science Institute, Development Office, and Research Integrity Office.

6. Maintains deep knowledge of sponsoring agency and institutional policies and applicable laws and regulations.  Keeps abreast of national trends in sponsored research administration and developments regarding policies and procedures of sponsoring agencies and the institution.  Analyzes the impact of federal regulatory changes on WFIRM and participates in the development and implementation of policies and procedures in response to new regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:
1. 	Bachelor's degree required; Master's preferred.  Scientific background a strong plus.
2. 	Progressively responsible positions of leadership in the field of research and grants administration, including five plus years directly relevant experience in higher education, or other non-profit, research-based organizations, Department of Defense and other government contracting, fiscal administration, pre- and post-award activities, including three years management and supervision of grants administration team.
3. 	Excellent interpersonal and strong verbal and written communication skills involving tact, diplomacy and negotiation skills in delicate and adversarial negotiations and discussions. Demonstrated expertise in cultivating and maintaining collaborative partnerships across diverse constituent groups.
4. 	Effective and resourceful leader, manager and team builder, with ability to marshal and deploy internal and external resources to achieve goals.
5. 	Superior intellect, able to quickly understand the complex environment and needs and creatively solve problems. Demonstrated good judgment.
6. 	Hardworking self-starter, able to establish priorities, set objectives, achieve goals, and move multiple projects forward in fast-paced environment.
