Director, Office of Research Development

The University of Connecticut is seeking a dynamic individual to serve as the Director of the new Office of Research Development.  The Director will be charged with building and capitalizing on the research strengths at UConn, enhancing the institution’s ability to garner competitive federal grants and strengthening industry grants and contracts.

Following the successful transformation of the University of Connecticut through the UConn 2000 and 21st Century UConn programs, the University of Connecticut has embarked upon the next phase of its ambitious plans with the continued support of the State of Connecticut.  This includes an unprecedented investment in a new Technology Park, the Bioscience Connecticut initiative and the location of the Jackson Laboratory at the University’s Health Center.  Additionally, the University is aiming to hire 290 new faculty over the next four years.

Reporting to the Vice President for Research, and in coordination with the Office of the Provost, the successful candidate will manage all aspects of the University’s efforts in research development including strategic research advancement, communication of research and research opportunities, enhancement of collaboration/team science, and proposal support functions.

The Director will be responsible for providing management and oversight to the staff of the Office of Research Development; participating in the development and implementation of policies and procedures governing research development at the University; developing and managing a program for identifying and disseminating  information regarding opportunities for significant research initiatives; facilitating events and other opportunities to identify complementary research interests and promote multi-disciplinary research initiatives and proposal efforts; and promoting the university’s research capabilities and accomplishments to strengthen the University’s visibility with external funding sources.

The ideal candidate must possess a Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Science, or a related field and a minimum of three years’ experience in research development, sponsored programs or a related area in a research intensive university.  The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills with an ability to facilitate meetings, develop and lead workshops, planning forums and other events.  The successful candidate must also be able to demonstrate experience working with the development of interdisciplinary research proposals; experience working effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and administrators; as well as experience marketing research opportunities and impact.  Knowledge of the operations of federal funding agencies; policies and regulations associated with research grants and their execution; as well as federal research, foundation, and grant funding programs and processes is also required.  A graduate degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Science, or a related field, as well as adeptness at collaborating and negotiating with diverse individuals and organizations are preferred.
