San Diego State University Research Foundation is a non-profit, auxiliary organization established to further the objectives of San Diego State University.  San Diego State University is currently designated as a "research university" with high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation and soon expects to be Doctoral/Research-Extensive.   SDSU faculty received $145 million in grants and contracts for research and program administration during fiscal year 2010-2011.   Additionally, SDSU faculty members have received a total of more than $1.1 billion in external funding since 2000.  The Research Foundation’s core function is to assist SDSU faculty and staff in developing and administering these externally funded projects.  The Sponsored Research Development Department is primarily responsible for pre-award services for grants and contracts submitted on behalf of San Diego State University.

The Development Specialist is responsible for assisting faculty with pre-award services, particularly with the development and submission of proposals for sponsored projects, to include interpreting guidelines for funding opportunities and applying these in proposal development and submission; developing and revising budgets for proposals using a variety of regulations, terms and conditions; assisting with obtaining campus approvals for submissions; advising and providing guidance to faculty on proposal development/submission; maintaining proposal information once submitted to agencies and taking action as necessary. Responsibilities will focus on technical and analytical aspects of the position, including fiscal and regulatory compliance issues and electronic proposal submission.

This is a 6 month temporary position, with a possibility of becoming a regular central staff position.

Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field; OR A minimum of 4 years of progressive responsibility in pre-award, research administration, or related field desired.  Experience working in an institution of higher education, research institution, non-profit organization or with federal, state, corporate and private funding agencies.  The ability to speak, read, and write effectively. Excellent customer service skills.  The ability to work well with people and establish effective relationships with academic, professional and clerical staff and with representatives of funding agencies. Excellent attention to detail, and ability to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines.
