BSL-2 space Timothy Sparklin 12 Nov 2011 09:06 EST

Dear colleagues

For those institutions with a "life science" building that combines space for teaching and research, a question. In either research or teaching lab space, how much square footage is allocated towards BSL-1 and/or BSL-2 areas? Do you have a certain number of BSL-2 labs available only in research areas or is it accessible to all researchers? Would this only be available in a vivarium?

Given the myriad of designs and space use, I'm just looking for a general consensus on how institutions use such space. Our campus is planning on constructing such a facility in the future and this question came up. I appreciate your insight.
