Re: Maximum PI Effort? Taylor, Amy 04 Jun 2008 10:03 EST

In my experience, there is always a maximum limit of 100% committed
effort for PI's. Sometimes faculty are devoted 100% of the time to
research, but generally, I would use a 5-10% cushion of non-funded,
uncommitted effort to allow for committee/administrative work, advising
students, writing new grants, etc.

More often, issues usually arise when the PI has to provide Other
Support documentation to demonstrate they will not have greater than
100% effort commitment in a funding period. Routinely, the federal
agencies we deal with will assess pending funding and effort for a PI
and request confirmation (and later effort certification) that effort
(funded and non-funded) would be adjusted if new funding is awarded at a
future date.

Occasionally, with these kinds of minor adjustments, we would have a PI
that also ran into the other federal effort guidepost - that of reducing
committed effort by more than 25% of the proposed effort, which would
then require notification and explanation to the federal agency.

Subject: [RESADM-L] Maximum PI Effort?

Good morning! Does anyone know if there is a maximum amount of effort
that
a PI can commit to his/her funded projects? I remember thinking that it
couldn't reach 100% because of the necessary administrative/grant
writing
duties that s/he might have, but I can't find that written down
anywhere.
Thanks!
Jessica
