capitalized equipment Lori Johnson 15 May 2008 18:43 EST

Hello Experienced Colleagues,
Can any or all of you help me with some questions rising at our
institution? We have a couple of NSF Major Research Instrumentation
Program (MRI) awards that are to obtain equipment for some labs and
research centers here at ISU. My question is: Does equipment purchased
under these MRI awards have to be capitalized equipment only. Our
capitalization threshold is $5K. Purchases are mostly capital equipment
with a cost greater than $5,000 but some items are coming in under our
threshold but are items that will go into the lab. Some of the items
are "part" of the bigger capitalized equipment items and some are
removable, almost consumable items that work with the larger pieces.
On other awards we account for such items as "Equipment > $5,000"
and "Equipment < $5,000". Because this is an NSF "equipment" grant,
does everything have to be capitalized to be paid for by the grant?
Any help would be great.
Thanks.
Lori Johnson
