grant editing assistance Johnson, Landy (Director of Grant Development) 10 Aug 2007 13:53 EST

Greg,

When my position was created, it was very clear that a primary motive for creating the position was to provide faculty with "support" for which they had been clamoring. Such proposal editing and preparation services are often considered part of the package that a faculty member expects, along with a computer, lab space, and a department secretary. Proposal development services are important for faculty retention and can be seen as part of whatever is offered for faculty development. In fact, there is somewhat of a trend for Research Offices or Sponsored Program Offices to be the locus for faculty development. I always say that being a mentor to professors is a key part of my job.

We have had some leadership changes at our institution and
questions have arisen over the value of offering general grant editing
assistance-helping develop a clear and compelling proposal that conforms
to the guidelines of the funder. Such assistance is a large part of
what I do, though I never try to actually write the proposal, and always
make clear my service does not replace, only augments, review of a
proposal by someone with expertise in that particular field. .
Quantitative measures of success I find hard to develop, as obviously
proposals may be rejected for any number of reasons. In short, any
suggestions on how I might justify my job? Sorry if this topic has been
discussed a lot in the past-I'm new to RESADM-L. Thanks, Greg (DeL)
