The Carilion Clinic, formerly known as Carilion Health System, a not-for profit integrated healthcare delivery system headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia is seeking a Director of Research. Carilion is embarking on a bold initiative to transform from a traditional healthcare system into a full clinic model similar to other non-university academic centers. Carilion has made a strong commitment to being physician led and is seeking to add a dynamic and visionary leader for its Department of Research to develop research activities in the Roanoke based Clinic and identify opportunities to expand across the Clinic. Carilion Health System was the 2002 recipient of the National Quality Award, has been named to the list of most wired and wireless health systems for the past 4 years, and received Magnet Nursing designation in 2003. Carilion has a well-established track record of adopting technology and supporting innovation and is building an integrated multispecialty physician led clinic. In addition, Carilion Clinic will have a consolidated regional medical center in Roanoke including the current 650 bed tertiary care facility. Carilion Clinic's graduate medical education programs include CGME and AOA approved residencies and fellowships including: Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Transition Program, Ob-Gyn, Psychiatry, Surgery, and Geriatric Medicine.

Reporting to the Vice President of Medical Education, the Director of Research has the strong support and access to both medical center and system-level executive leadership. Experience in the development of research curriculum, clinical trials, health care delivery research, and transnational research is desirable.

Leads efforts to develop and enhance the Carilion Clinic research enterprise. Responsible for the overall direction, oversight, and management of research at Carilion Clinic under the direction of the Vice President of Medical Education. Encourages research participation and facilitates high quality, scientifically sound research studies that demonstrate commitment to providing quality patient care.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assures that research is conducted in a manner that meets requirements of external entities such as regulators, third party payers and funding agencies. Assists with all aspects of the research process including conceptualization, implementation, analysis, and dissemination. Leads activities for acquisition of external funding for research and provides a formalized infrastructure to investigators for submitting, reviewing, and approving research proposals. Ensures that all proposal submissions and awards adhere to federal, state, institutional and sponsor guidelines. Directs clinic-wide development of sponsored projects administration, clinical research processes and programs and research education & regulatory compliance policies and programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph. D. or M.D. or equivalent combination of education and experience in the fields of human subjects research, regulatory, compliance, legal, financial management or business management required. Supervisory/leadership experience preferred. Minimum of 5-7 years experience in grants preparation and/or research administration; 10 years in clinical research in a university or health care setting; 3-5 years experience in pre and post-award management experience preferred. Minimum of five (5) years experience in human subjects research, regulatory departments, compliance, legal, financial management or business management. Knowledge of federal and private funding organizations and demonstrated ability to work effectively with them.  To learn more about this position please contact:
