Graduate Students Funded by Sponsored Programs DeVries, Christina L 17 Jul 2006 13:18 EST

Hello,

We have some questions about the handling of graduate students funded by
sponsored programs.

1. At your institution, what constitutes a complete graduate Research
Assistant "package" when budgeting for and charging externally funded
programs (i.e., stipend and tuition only or does it include health and/or
other fees that the student would otherwise have to pay out-of-pocket?)

2. If the package includes fees, which fees are included (e.g., health fee,
dental insurance, application fee, student organization fee, etc.)?

3. If your institution includes health and/or other fees and these are
charged to sponsored program awards, what do you do to accommodate graduate
Teaching Assistants and other classes of graduate students and who pay for
this expense?

4. Does your institution treat graduate Research Assistants who work 12
months per year as employees during the summer (i.e., do you withhold FICA
and other taxes/assessments)?

Thanks for your help,

Tina
