Re: Novel about Misconduct in Science Elsa Nadler 30 May 2006 08:39 EST

On the same note, Carl Djerassi has a novel called "Cantor's Dilemma"
that is all about various responsible conduct of research issues:
authorship, laboratory records, collaborations, mentoring, fabrication
and falsification, ownership, etc. I heartily recommend it to all. It is
good for grad students because Djerassi is a Nobel laureate, and it is
also well written.

I just finished a very interesting novel - Intuition by Allegra
Goodman.
The novel is all about a laboratory of a fictitious research institute
in the Boston area in which one post-doc brings about charges of
misconduct against the members of her (soon to be ex-) research team.
The book does, in my opinion, a very nice job of describing some of
the
emotions and issues that arise in the bringing of such charges and in
reaction to such charges being brought - all except for the
description
of the federal reaction -the "ORIS", the federal agency responsible
for
investigating misconduct and a Congressional hearing,

All in all, a very nice account - and I like the way she writes (I
also
enjoyed her two previous novels).
