Bob,

We were told by NIH several years ago that the core cost of running an
animal facility should be calculated as a part of your indirect cost
rate. Animal and supply costs are appropriately charged as direct
costs.

We are preparing our first DS-2 and have a question about completing
section 3.2 for Service Centers... Do we have to complete item (b) for

Animal Care Facilities if its under the $1,000,000 threshold? We have
a
very small facility and do very little research with animals. The few

grants that do use animals that are housed in our facility generally
pay
only the direct costs associated with their use (such as the purchase
of
the animals and any related supplies).
