Re: NIH AREA Grant Proposal Lembke, Judith 22 Feb 2006 11:20 EST

We were having this same problem as well. But, through trial and error
(when calls to the NIH Commons Help Desk proved unhelpful), the
following is what worked for us:
- On the modular budget page, include any cents in your indirect costs
calculation (i.e. direct costs of 136,528 x 45% = 61,437.60).
- On the 424 face page, round down. (i.e. total costs of 150,000 +
indirect costs of 61,437 = 211,437).

We had success yesterday afternoon when applying this method.

Good luck!

Same problem here. No one at NIH seems to know how to fix the problem.
We cannot validate at eCOMMONS, because with errors you cannot submit.
I will continue to update all with any info. I may have. I do know that
the deadline for the R01 Grants has been extended due to similar
problems.

Help with the following problem will be greatly appreciated! We have
been trying since Friday to submit proposals to the NIH AREA grant
program. The consistent error message says: Indirect Cost Funds
Requested for budget year 1 must equal the product of Indirect Cost
Rate
and Indirect Cost Base for the same year-Error." To complete the PHS
398 Modular Budget form, we filled in the section for Budget Period 1,

with the Direct Costs being the total modular amount requested for the

entire period of the project; and then we completed the Indirect Costs

section by multiplying our Salary & Wages indirect cost type times the

actual figure of salaries and benefits for the entire project period,
and then we rounded the resulting figure down to a whole number for
the
Indirect Funds Requested.

My calls to the eRA Commons help line resulted in a suggestion to round

the resulting number up or to use the actual cents as well as the
dollars. Neither option worked. Now the eRA people have referred me
to
the NIH help line, and I am waiting for a call back. I am probably
overlooking something very simple, but I'm becoming a bit frantic that

our faculty members' proposals may not get submitted in time. Thank
you
all!
