United Way Funding Johnson, Landy (Director of Grant Development) 22 Dec 2005 09:51 EST

Regarding a prohibition by some foundations on giving to institutions
that receive funding from the United Way, yes, this is true. Seven
months ago I "crossed over from the dark side" and left Development for
Research Administration. From my experience as an Associate Director of
Foundation Relations at another institution I can tell you that our
local Community Foundation would not award money to anyone who received
United Way funding. I suspect this would be the case for many community
foundations. They often support the United Way, so they might feel they
are giving you money twice if you receive from both sources.

It is also the case that the standard Bank of America application, used
for a whole array of foundations they administer (the list varies with
location), asks whether you have United Way funding. However I don't
know if having United Way funding removes you from consideration or not
for all of those foundations, or just for some or none.

Happy holidays to all!

Landy
