Re: Postdoc experience Susan Meslang 26 Sep 2005 11:15 EST

It needs to be more than the basics "follow format guidlines" - etc.
It should include those extras that make a proposal competitive. It
should include how to workout partnerships and agreements. Why they are
important. Evaluation details, budget development -there is a lot to be
covered - The best workshop I went to was seven hours a day for five
days.

I would be interested in knowing the specifics regarding what you
consider "exceptional training in grantsmanship" to be. Thanks.

Policies to enrich??? Not trying to be a smarty-pants here, but I
would
say that if you want to enrich and improve the postdoctoral experience
at your institution, you should focus first on what will help them
prepare for a career in research... such as a good mentoring program
with a variety of mentorship experiences (as well as a primary
mentor),
support for scientific meetings, the usual training in scientific
integrity, and exceptional training in grantsmanship (which includes
an
intensive in-house review of anything they want to submit to outside
agencies). After you decide the experiences you want them to have,
then
start thinking about any "policies" that might be built around those
experiences. Let structure follow function, rather than the other way
round.

Morning All,

We have formed a committee that is attempting to enrich and improve
the
PostDoc experience at IES. Does anyone have institutional policies
that
they would be willing to share.

Thanks for your help.
