Hi Charles -

It seems that the cart is going before the horse.  First you should decide
what duties, responsibilities and authorities you want your research
assistants to have, then you determine what classification they should be.
With the responsibility should come the reward.  Those with the most
responsibility are less likely to abuse the more flexible aspects of their
classifications.  If you are having employees grumbling about having to work
a regular 8 hour day, it might mean that you have folks not ready for the
responsibility of having an exempt status.

Greetings to all...

The correct classification of employees is essential to managing
costs, employer compliance, avoiding grievances and lawsuits.

I've been receiving some grumblings about requiring my research
assistants/associates to work an eight hour day. There seems to be an
opinion that because they are currently classified as exempt
employees, they are not required to work a full although they are paid
as such.

Although I am aware of the work day latitude that the exempt status
carries; I was wondering if any of you classify your research
assistants and associates as non-exempt employees...or in the
alternative, can you offer any strategies (in a research environment)
to define the work day as an eight hour day.
