Re: Recognition programs Rhodes, Kris 22 Nov 2004 14:01 EST

I've done a number of recognition programs at different places.

We did a dinner and research - roast for all of our funded faculty at
one university - much like the tape measures. We had empty piggy banks,
kitty toys for herding cats, an Eyeore for our ultimate pessimist, wood
blocks wrapped in red tape, bug spray (for a research whose cock roaches
always seem to escape), etc. The faculty loved it and we had great fun
putting it together (it was a lot of work though - I'm still indept to
my former staff who remember the event and the amount of work).

I have also done personal visits were I distributed kudo gifts once a
year. Using a recognition theme and custom art, we did Golf umbrellas,
another year we did folios. We did set a dollar threshold for larger
gifts, but anyone who had an award got at least a small gift - mouse
pads (dated now), coffee mugs - all with our theme logo. This also gave
me a chance to personally visit all of our funded faculty once a year.
We believed the theme logo on a recognition item helped create
recognition and sponsored research enthusiasm beyond the recipients.

These are typically large time investments, but considered
worthwhile....the gold bars and tape measure actually sound a little
more manageable for a larger scale institution/organization.

Subject: Re: [RESADM-L] Recognition programs

Our VP-R at VCU has had a program for three years now in which there is
a dinner for all PI's over a certain level, with an important speaker
form off campus. The speaker, with a nationally recognized name,
focuses on something our researchers need to know more about; a recent
one was COI and another was protection of research subjects.

An additional, and very well received recognition, awarded there, is
Graduate Fellowships (varying sizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd) for the
departments with the greatest INCREASE in sponsored programs for the
year. The measure of increase has several components, and they change
somewhat from year to year so that the same departments will not always
win.

Both individual faculty members and departments are very conscious of
this recognition. I've heard them say, "I'll be invited next year!"
And the fellowships are very welcome, because they allow departments to
recruit top students who otherwise could not afford the programs
(especially as out of-state tuition is significantly higher).

This is supported from a small amount of F&A recovery from a $185M/year
research program.
