Overload Restrictions Susan Meslang 20 Oct 2004 10:39 EST

I attended the ATE NSF financial workshop this past week. The question
arose concerning the conflict with giving release time and overload in
the same pay period. I have always heard that this is not appropriate
and NSF stated firmly that they will not pay in this situation. But,
everyone became upset with this issue in the case of someone who always
teaches an extra course etc. My concern is a little different. In our
project we have small "stipends" of $1,000 for development of a new
curriculum for the project. This does not merit releasing the faculty
member from teaching a course - but is outside the responsibilities of
their contract since the project is on a different discipline. We have
in the past simply paid the faculty member "a special pay" for this
task. Of course, if this is within the academic year it would appear as
an overload since they are teaching full time. Must we stop this
practice? Has anyone had audit difficulty with this practice?
