Subject: [RESADM-L] Faculty Compensation in Private Foundation Awards

Question 1:
How does your institution handle additional compensation for faculty
during
the academic year on private foundation awards? Do you automatically
grant additional compensation if the sponsor allows--essentially
accentuating a difference between private foundations and i.e. NSF ?

Answer: Our faculty does not get "additional" compensation for
obtaining grants. They are expected to raise a certain percentage of
their salary by research grants, and the salary amounts are reimbursed
to the University, not the faculty member.

Question 2:
How do you reconcile your discrepancies between your federally approved
indirect cost rate and what is allowed (if any) on private foundation
awards? If no indirect costs are allowed, do you direct charge
post-award
administration personnel to the award?

Answer: the University absorbs the cost if full F&A is not reimbursed.
