TITLE:  Director, Sponsored Projects

CLIENT:  The University of San Francisco

 The University of San Francisco (USF), founded in 1855 as the city’s
first college, is a premier Jesuit Catholic, urban University with a
global perspective.  The University is comprised of six schools (two
colleges: Arts and Sciences and Professional Studies; and the School of
Business and Management, Law, Nursing, and Education).  USF serves a
very diverse student population of 8,000 traditional and non-traditional
undergraduate and graduate students on the main campus and five regional
sites.

LOCATION:  San Francisco, California

REPORTING
RELATIONSHIP: This position will report directly to the Associate
Provost and will work closely with the Office of Institutional Research.

POSITION
CONCEPT:  The Director of Sponsored Projects will be an enterprising and
resourceful person whose mission will be to create an Office of
Sponsored Projects to support and expand the University’s successful
governmental research and training grant activity.  This new office will
assist faculty and staff in identifying funding opportunities and
matching those opportunities with USF’s mission focused on teaching,
research, and service.  In addition, the Director will manage project
compliance and intellectual property issues and recommend policies
regarding the conduct of research and the enhancement of grant activity
at the University.

 SPECIFIC
DUTIES: 1. In coordination with the provost, deans, faculty, and staff,
the Director will establish the new Office of Sponsored Projects at USF
to identify and respond to federal and state grant and contract
opportunities.

2. In coordination with the deans and faculty, the Director will assess
current and emerging legislation and appropriations, identify funding
agency priorities and assure a continuing flow of information essential
to the support of a research and scholarly agenda consistent with
University priorities.

3. Develop and manage an internal system to alert faculty on a regular
basis of funding opportunities.

4. In collaboration with the faculty, staff, and several University
offices, the Director will work on the development of proposals, faculty
training, and the management of pre- and post-award activities.

5. Serve as a liaison with the University Advancement office in its work
with corporations and foundations, and with the University’s Business
and Finance office which supports the purchasing and accounting services
for externally funded projects.

6. Performs other research and leadership duties as assigned.

CANDIDATE
QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have experience with
institutional research and sponsored projects, staff supervision, and
budgetary management.

- A proven track record of obtaining federal and state awards.

- Experience in managing pre- and post-award activity.

- Familiarity with research compliance and intellectual property
administration.

- Knowledge of federal agency practices and policies.

- The selected candidate will have an appreciation for USF’s mission and
character.

- Must possess a strong work ethic coupled with a hands-on approach to
accomplishing tasks.  This person will give evidence of meeting or
exceeding goals.

- Will have demonstrated supervisory skills.

- Must have the ability to work effectively with a variety of publics,
both internal and external to the University.  The ability to foster
trust and a positive relationship with faculty is critical to the
success of this role.

- The capacity to produce creative and innovative solutions and
approaches to common problems are essential.

- Must be a proactive personality with the ability to identify potential
grant opportunities and appropriate faculty for those opportunities.
Must be able to initiate communication with faculty about these
opportunities and support them in developing proposals and obtaining and
managing the grants.

- Highly developed written, verbal, and accounting skills are required.

- Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

- Ideally, this candidate will have relationships with people in
grant-awarding offices and agencies in Washington D.C.

- Process and project management understanding and skills.

EDUCATION: A Master's degree is required.  A doctoral degree is
preferred.
