Faculty "Bonuses" from Indirects Kevin Sottak 19 Mar 2002 11:56 EST

Colleagues:

The University of the Virgin Islands is in the introductory stages of
developing an indirect cost distribution schedule and policy. A faculty
member claims that a colleague at a major mainland university told him that
his institution's policy allows successful grant-writers to collect an
annual "bonus" based on a percentage (1%) of indirect costs recovered
through the grant. I've never heard of an institution that makes cash
payments to investigators based on indirect costs recovered. Is this
legal? Do any of you have similar policies that you would be willing to
share with me?

Thank you for any and all guidance you can provide.
