insurance for independent consultants under a grant award Marino, Carmine 15 Mar 2001 16:30 EST

When an institution receives a grant award and subcontracts out some work to
an individual consultant who is not a part of the institution, these people
may go "on site" to work in "high risk environments" or may subcontract
others to work for them. There are two things an institution can do to
protect itself, asking that the individual indemnify the institution in any
event and require the individual to maintain insurance. It is the latter
part of this protection which I am having a little trouble with.

I was wondering, for those who deal with these types of situations, if your
institutions require these independent consultants to maintain some type of
general comprehensive liability insurance (for contractual and personal
injury situations)? The indemnification clause alone really isn't
sufficient.

Any advice?
