Faculty Appointments Lauren Beastall 13 Dec 2000 19:19 EST

I have a couple of questions about faculty appointments, summer/academic
salaries on grants, and current and pending support.

1) In terms of faculty appointments - how do you break down faculty
appointments at your institution? How much is required for research,
training, committees, etc...? Are faculty limited to how much time they can
spend on one or the other? Can they buy out time from one category in order
to do one of the other categories? Are faculty limited to 100% appointments?
Can they work more than 100%?

2) In terms of summer/academic salary - What are your institutions policies
regarding summer salary from sponsored projects? Can faculty receive 2 or 3
months salary? Can faculty receive academic year salaries from sponsored
research projects?

3) In terms of current and pending support - NIH states, "that a project
commitment overlap occurs when any project personnel has time commitments
exceeding 100 percent. This is the case whether or not the grant includes
salary support for the effort. While information on other support is only
requested for key personnel (excluding consultants), no individuals on the
project may have commitments in excess of 100 percent." Does this mean all
institutional plus all sponsored commitments? Does it apply to other
agencies as well?

4) Where can I pick up information/policy/regulations on any of the above
referenced topics?

Thanks for your help.
