Shelly,

Don't even THINK about building and maintaining your own. What you DO need
to think about is why you want a database, what you plan to do with it, the
benefits you hope to accrue to individual faculty and your institution, and
the likelihood that faculty and/or administration will actually use it. Get
trial access to Community of Science (www.cos.com) and InfoEd
(www.infoed.org) and see which works better for your campus. Get a group of
faculty to test both systems for a month or so.
