"Subscription" Research Herbert B. Chermside 04 May 2000 09:21 EST

Can anyone share experiences, policies, practices on "subscription"
research? This is the broad approach to funding research by collecting
"subscriptions" from subscribing entities (mostly, but not necessarily,
commercial), pooling the subscriptions to support research of general
interest to all subscribers (i.e., focused on general needs of the
subscribers rather than specific needs of one sponsor), and allowing
subscribers access to the research results and any intellectual property
created on a special basis which recognizes their subscription support.

I'm interested in perceived advantages and disadvantages, as well as
mechanics that work and those that do not.

Thanks, friends!
