Re: Human Subjects Software Herbert B. Chermside 28 Apr 2000 16:50 EST

VCU has adopted the InfoEd InfoOffice system. The new version is
significantly better than the old PC one.

VCU was in a disaster situation after our record keeping was found
inadequate by OPRR. InfoOffice was already procured, but not installed.
InfoEd rallied around to help, and juggled installation schedules so we
could put up the IRB module first, in order to demonstrate to OPRR that
future record keeping would be adequate. In the process of meeting OPRR
requirements, we needed a functionality that InfoOffice had not had -- a
record of which PI's had accomplished the training necessary to perform
human subjects research, and a record of which individuals had accomplished
the training to be in the pool from which IRB members are drawn -- a
functionality I call "credentialling". InfoEd made some quick
modifications to the IRB module to meet that need. Now we have the LATEST
AND BEST version of their IRB module. And it will clearly meet OPRR's
expectations.

VCU is very impressed both with the software and with InfoEd as a supplier.
We are running as fast as we can to bring up the rest of the system --
we bought most of the modules, and may add Tech Transfer and Clinical
Trails. We are now asking InfoOffice to add another functionality, which
might come out as a separate module, to meet some new needs we have as VCU
moves from a really poor organizational structure giving weak support to
our faculty to a very 21st century structure.

InfoOffice's IRB module is excellent, and flexible. More important to VCU,
it is merely part of an integrated system that can be tweaked to meet our
upcoming organizational improvements.
